Medical Reapplication: A Non-Standard Entry Into Medicine

My journey into medical school was…quite out of the ordinary. From 4 unsuccessful med applications, to applying for biomedical science through clearing and finally securing a place at Anglia Ruskin’s medical school, I’m genuinely impressed by how far I’ve come, regardless of the hurdles thrown my way. I know plenty of you are in a similar situation and can understand and relate to my stress. Therefore, I hope sharing my journey will uplift your morale and bolster your confidence with your medical application process, as well as steering clear of the pitfalls I encountered.

How to Successfully Reapply to Medical School: Learn From My Journey of Overcoming Rejection

The next few months were when I began to doubt myself gain. I was disappointed when I received rejections from the schools I applied to. However, seeing my friends going to university brought back these feelings. I felt frustrated that I had worked hard throughout the year and was still unsuccessful in securing a place at medical school. Shifting my focus to concentrating on my plans for the future has allowed me to become more confident in myself. I was able to reflect on my previous application in order to submit a stronger one and was able to make the most of my gap year.

An Interview with Krithicck

I first heard of Medic Mentor through school, where they advertised GIM conferences to learn more about the medical application process. Following this, I gradually immersed myself in more MM programmes such as the free work experience and medical society, which I found useful for building skills and experiences as part of my application.

An Interview With Laura

To me, Medic Mentor was first a poster. During registration, my sixth-form tutor showed us a poster advertising a Get into Medicine (GIM) conference from Medic Mentor. I remember mindlessly picking up this photocopy of the poster and then placing it in my school bag. I didn’t think much of it at the time. However, I was beyond lucky to have taken that poster home, as my mum found it between all my notes, proactively followed up the website, and offered to take me to this GIM conference with my dad. Without realising it, this seemingly simple decision transformed my experience applying to medical school.

I don’t know why I remember this so well! I sat with my Dad with a notepad trying to jot down as much information I can from the Get into Medicine Conferences.

An Interview with Manas

Medic mentor first came to our school and delivered an amazing presentation that got me very interested in finding out more about what they do. I then found out more information and decided to attend the national healthcare weekend which is now called the get into medicine conference. From then on, I decided to join some of the various programmes they offer and went on to present at the conference in front of 150 people a few months later. Since then I have done many things with medic mentor and I am now a scholar on their scholarship programme.

Studying Medicine: How My Medical Journey Began

Is it too late? This was my initial thought when I found out about Medic Mentor in Year 11. It felt as though lots of students had been involved with Medic Mentor projects for a while and I was worried I may have missed out. However, over the course of a few weeks, I was attending weekly VMS meetings and before long became a committee member of the Medic Mentor Book Club. From the very first Get Into Medicine conference that I attended with my mum to beginning university as a Medic Mentor Scholar, my hand has been held by Medic Mentor throughout and it can do the same for you.

The Corona Cohort: My Experience as an FY1 Doctor

The pandemic and lockdown were a strange time for us all, but perhaps especially so for those of us who were due to graduate that summer, AKA the ‘corona cohort’. I studied at Nottingham, so had (fortunately) finished my finals and had my results before the pandemic was declared. Slightly
