Why is it Important to Participate in Debates and Presentations?

In the highly competitive world of medical school admissions, developing strong debating and presentation skills can set you apart from the competition and significantly enhance your chances of success. As aspiring doctors, effective communication is an essential skill.

Honing your debating skills allows you to articulate your thoughts clearly, logically, and persuasively. In medical school and throughout your career, you will encounter numerous situations where the ability to express your ideas succinctly and convincingly is paramount. Whether you’re participating in patient consultations, presenting research findings, or engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations, effective communication is key to building trust, facilitating teamwork, and delivering quality patient care.

Additionally, developing strong presentation skills is crucial for aspiring doctors. The ability to deliver engaging and impactful presentations showcases your confidence, professionalism, and command over complex medical concepts. Whether you’re presenting during medical school interviews, conferences, or in a clinical setting, your presentation skills can captivate your audience, leaving a lasting impression and positioning you as a competent and compelling candidate.

Where can I present?

Each month at the Virtual Medical Society (VMS), we hold a “Guest Speaker” competition, where the winner is invited to present at the last VMS session of the month.

To apply, select your topic from the list, submit a 1-minute recording of yourself and let us know what you would talk about if you were to be our Guest Speaker of the Month.

Guest speakers will get 1 hour of personal mentoring from a Chief Mentor, as well as a national presentation certificate for their portfolio.

Previous topics have included “The Ethics of DNACPR”, “The Importance of Mental Health” and “Present an Interesting Medical Issue”.

Prepare to present at our wider reading society with these essential steps:

  1. Organise Your Presentation: As you plan your presentation, structure your points in a manner that mirrors the flow of your discussion. Divide your theme into logical sections, ensuring clarity and coherence. Clearly state the key areas you intend to cover, allowing your audience to follow your presentation effortlessly.

  2. Add Depth with Supporting Details: To enhance the impact of your presentation, provide sufficient detail that substantiates your points. Incorporate references from ‘The Body Keeps the Score’, relevant research studies, or compelling case studies that bolster the credibility and richness of your analysis. These examples will serve to illustrate and reinforce your arguments, making your presentation more compelling.

  3. Demonstrate Insight and Passion: Infuse your presentation with your unique insights and passion for the theme. Offer personal reflections and interpretations, showcasing your deep understanding and engagement with the material. This not only adds depth to your presentation but also creates an emotional connection with your audience, fostering a more memorable and impactful experience.

  4. Proofread for Clarity and Accuracy: Before submitting your application, proofread it meticulously. Ensure that your points are clear and effectively convey your intended message. Pay attention to punctuation and tense usage, ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout your application. By presenting a polished and error-free application, you will demonstrate professionalism and attention to detail.
