Celebrating Excellence: Medic Mentor Scholars Win Big at the AI NHS Hackathon

Medic Mentor is thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our scholars, Kashmala Shah and Aaliyah Ogunlana, who recently won the prestigious AI NHS Hackathon. This event brought together brilliant minds to develop innovative solutions to public health challenges using AI and digital health tools. Kashmala and Aaliyah’s success demonstrates not only their exceptional abilities but also the strength of the foundations laid by the Ultimate Medical Application Pathway.

The Hackathon Experience

Hackathons are unique collaborative events where participants solve real-world challenges under intense time constraints. The NHS AI Hackathon focused on digital health solutions to improve healthcare practices—a perfect fit for the innovative and driven Medic Mentor Scholars.

At the start of this month I attended an AI NHS Hackathon. I was unsure what to expect at first as I had never attended one before. However, it was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to the potential of AI in healthcare and how it can be used to improve healthcare practices. It was both rewarding and motivating to work with people from different professional backgrounds, tackle real-world challenges, and learn so much in just one day. If you’re curious about AI or passionate about innovation in healthcare, I highly encourage you to take part in the next Hackathon. You’ll gain valuable skills, meet and network with lots of people and have fun- a lot of fun!” – Kashmala Shah, 2nd Year Medical Student at Hull York Medical School

Reflecting on her experience, Kashmala, a second-year medical student at Hull York Medical School, said, “It was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to the potential of AI in healthcare and how it can be used to improve practices. It was so rewarding and motivating to work with people from different professional backgrounds, tackle real-world challenges, and learn so much in just one day.”

Not only did this event showcase their ability to collaborate and think critically, but it also demonstrated their preparedness to lead the future of healthcare—an ethos deeply embedded in Medic Mentor.

Kashmala and Aaliyah are shining examples of how the Ultimate Medical Application Pathway equips aspiring medics with the tools they need to excel. This comprehensive programme is designed to prepare students for every aspect of their medical careers, beginning long before they step into a university classroom. Key elements of the pathway include:

  • Leadership Programmes: Students are enrolled in initiatives like the Medical Leadership Programme, where they develop essential skills like decision-making, delegation, and team management. These leadership traits are crucial for professionals aiming to make meaningful contributions to the NHS.
  • 1-to-1 Mentoring: Every student is paired with a dedicated mentor who offers personalized guidance on everything from applications to career strategies. Kashmala and Aaliyah benefitted from expert advice that helped them approach challenges with confidence and creativity.
  • Skill Development: From honing presentation skills to fostering teamwork, the Pathway’s immersive summer school, leadership activities, and medical awards programme ensure students build confidence and competence. These skills undoubtedly played a pivotal role in their Hackathon success.

Shaping Future NHS Leaders

The Ultimate Medical Application Pathway doesn’t just focus on university offers. It is about nurturing future changemakers who will lead innovation and transformation within the NHS. By participating in leadership programmes, such as mentorship initiatives and hands-on activities like presentations and mock interviews, students cultivate the mindset and skills needed for impactful medical careers.

Competitions like the AI NHS Hackathon serve as a proving ground for these skills. Kashmala and Aaliyah exemplify how the pathway helps students stand out by fostering creativity, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that benefit them not just in competitive events, but in their ongoing medical journeys.
